A small company based in Blenheim, NZ is taking the waste products from the local Malrborough wine industry, and instead of dumping it, it's turning it into make-up, food and vitamins – without using any chemicals.
When wine is made, the grape seeds and skins are usually just discarded. But the seeds in particular are very high in antioxidants, and for some reason the grape seeds produced in Marlborough are twice as high in antioxidants as grape seeds elsewhere.
The company extract the antioxidants from the seeds using just water and a unique machine it has developed. And international firms are buying the extract for use in cosmetics, food and vitamin supplements.
New Zealand Extracts hopes to look into creating similar products from the by-products of other fruits and berries. Meanwhile they are increasing production of the raw material which already totals 100kg a month.
